One of a kind: Queen Anne Home! Building process began in 1898 and continued till completion of 'Queen Anne' style home in 1904. Original woodwork, hardwood floors, and pocket doors that continue to work. A little history, John D. Lynch had a remarkable life. He was born in Ireland in 1856 and was brought to America at three months of age. Supposedly, his parents smuggled him aboard a famine ship because infants were not allowed. Lynch attended a Catholic school in Kansas, then went into railroading, and eventually into railroad contracting in 1877.He was a lifetime friend of Monmouth native John Findley Wallace (son of Monmouth College president, who became the chief engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad, and much of Lynch's work was done for the Illinois Central, building hundred of miles of track. In 1905, Lynch was elected president of the new Trust & Savings Bank. He became a director of the Monmouth Plow Company in 1901. In 1922, the company was reorganized as the retail chain Brown, Lynch, Scott and was named president. Lynch put all seven of his children through college and gave each of them a farm. He constructed the Lynch Building in 1912 currently occupied by the Italian Village Pizza. Quote of local newspaper at time of residence was being built: Among the many handsome residence properties being built in Monmouth there are several deserving of special mention. The John D. Lynch new home on South A Street is one that will when completed will vie with all others in artistic design and size.
