Six Tips for a Successful Long Distance Move

By Mikayla St Clair

You  may  need  to  relocate  to  a  different  region  or country once or a couple of times in your lifetime. The reasons for relocating could  vary sometimes; it could be work, family, or just a much-needed change of scenery. Moreover, to transport your possessions to  your  new  place,  you  may need to hire professional movers. Also, it is good to double-check your belongings to make sure that you  don't  leave  anything behind. For any successful long-distance move, you must have a checklist. It helps you prepare and solve any  challenges  you  may  encounter  in  the process.  Other than that, here are six tips to help you have a successful long-distance move.

1. Create a Plan

A  long-distance  move  can be hectic, especially the months or  weeks  leading  up to it. However, creating a plan on how you  will  go  about the process can minimize the stress. The list should contain your targets alongside the time schedule. This  plan  will  ensure  that you are on track with everything and  safe  from  last-minute  anxiety.  Also,  it  will guarantee that you have all the items required in-place, from money to the packing boxes.

2. Find a Moving Company

Professional  moving  companies  can  lessen your workload when relocating. While looking for a moving company, ensure you read their past clients' reviews.  In most cases, this will  give you a good overview of what type of customer support service you will receive.

While  researching,  do a review of the cost estimates on each moving company to ensure you stay within your budget. It is always a good  idea to visit them in person or call the head-office for a much-detailed discussion on prices and other particulars. Make sure you refer to your budget before making your choice.

3. Take an Inventory of Your Belongings

Taking  an  inventory  of  your belongings can help you so much when  relocating. A checklist will help you separate the essential items  from  the  non-essentials.  In  most  cases,  cutting  down your  luggage can reduce the cost. You can opt to either donate the   extra   baggage  or  sell  them  online  if  they  are  in  good condition.

4. Pack and Label Your Stuff

Packing  can  be  tedious if you are doing it by yourself. Some movers do offer this service as part of their moving package. If you  plan  to  do  it  yourself,  ensure  you  have  an  adequate  number  of  boxes.  Don’t  forget  to label your boxes for easy identification  when  unpacking later. You can ask friends or family members to assist you during this process. Remember to purchase  cushioning  material  for  wrapping  delicate  items.  Quality  packaging  material will protect your belongings from scratches and dents.

5. Shipping Your Car

Some  people  may  choose  to  sell  their  car  when  planning a long-distance   move.    However,  if  you  treasure  your  vehicle enough  to keep, there are a couple of ways you can take it with you  wherever you are moving to. You can drive it yourself if the roads  to  the  new place are in good condition. Apart from that, you  can  hire a driver  to  take  it  to  your new address at a fee. Towing  your  car  behind  the mover’s company truck is also an option.  Even  though  it  may  not  be entirely safe, it is cheaper than hiring car shipping services.

6. Buy Moving Insurance

Traveling  has its risks, and it’s always a better idea to be safe than sorry. Shop around for an excellent moving insurance policy, and make  sure  you  read  the fine print on what will be covered. Most professional moving companies may have insurance, but it could be limited. A good insurance policy is a must-have, more so if you have some valuable possessions.

When moving for the first time, the process can be expensive, tedious, and stressful. Nonetheless, getting a professional mover and following  the  above  tips will make the process run smoother. Due to several changes, such as weather and food, most people find it  difficult  to  adapt  to  a  new place. Consequently, you must give yourself enough time to adjust to the new environment. Experts cite that you will feel comfortable in your new environment in about three months.
