Wilmington has an estimated population of more than 70,000 residents and is considered one of the most significant towns in Delaware and established on the Delaware River by Swedish settlements that formed part of an early colony called New Sweden in 1638. Fort Christina was once at the heart of Wilmington and named in honor of its Swedish Queen. Just one mile away is Fort Christina; in 1938, the Swedish state donated to Wilmington an official monument commemorating it there in its original location.
