TREADWELL FARMS HISTORIC DISTRICTDesignated in 1967, Treadwell Farm Historic District is one of New York's oldest historic districts, named for the Treadwell family who purchased the undeveloped land in 1815. The district consists of East 61st and East 62nd Streets between Second and Third Avenues, composed intentionally of four or five story single-family townhouses built from 1868 to 1876.ARCHITECTURE & INFLUENCEBuilt in 1868 for builders J. & G. Ruddell at estimated cost of $16,000 each, architect James W. Pirrson created Numbers 222 through 240, with 224 East 62nd Street as the gold standard for the row with a distinct width of 20 feet. Pirrson, the son of a well-known piano manufacturer, later pioneered in the planning of modern apartment houses.HOME AND HEARTHWith garden level and stoop entries, this 20 foot wide townhouse is uncommonly wide for Treadwell Farms.
