Elmwood was designed in 1851 by master builder, Major Thomas Lewinski, who introduced Springfield to the most elegant Italianate architecture of the era and has been placed on the National Historic Register. Elmwood is designed in the Italianate style, most prevalent in America between the 1850's and the 1880's, inspired by rambling, informal Italian farmhouses and Italian-style villa architecture. Original double channel brick stabilize interior walls making Elmwood a fortress. Almost floor to ceiling original Gothic windows grace every floor. To accommodate modern technology and safety, all of Elmwood but two room were rewired in the 1990's. All water pipes were replace with two inch copper pipes to the road and the roof was replace in 2005 with a commercial roof with a 50 year warranty. The main floor is comprised of a spacious elegant foyer adorned by a 12 foot tall hand carved arch, an immense parlor, a beautiful library with poplar shelving, a dining room/Statesman room, kitchen, half bath, sewing room, pantry and laundry. An elliptical staircase leads to chamber rooms on the second floor. Lush plaster cornices and ceiling centerpieces decorate the ballroom/living area. The two great rooms can be left open for entertaining or separated by sliding wooden doors to use as a living room and bedroom. Four fireplaces are on the main floor, two mantles of which were built of imported white Italian marble and one of Kentucky Chestnut intricately carved of native Kentucky flowers. Multiple oversized closets grace the main floor. A concealed second staircase could be converted to another bathroom. Beautiful kitchen windows overlook perennial garden. Elegant tile flooring is made with the exceptional Schluter tile system, specifically designed with a vapor barrier and independently placed tiles for stability and long life. A half door divides the kitchen & dining room. A half bath is positioned off of kitchen for convenience. An 250 sq. ft. addition was recently added to the kitchen allowing a side entrance from the outside into a large utility room with a sink and counter, multiple cabinets, & a large storage pantry room with pocket door. There is also an additional sewing room with a pocket door which could be used as a storage room. UPSTAIRS CHAMBERS The upstairs bedroom chambers are distinguished by tall original single pane Gothic windows, very typical of Italianate houses .At the top of the elliptical staircase is a large open landing with huge original tall decorative windows overlooking the premises. Landing opens onto 2 bedroom chambers & a bathroom. To the left, the master bedroom chamber has a fireplace than can be converted to gas. The bedroom opens to a balcony with an outside exit/entrance. The master bath has a Jacuzzi whirlpool, dimmable lighting, His & Her sink and powder areas, a heated towel warmer, tile shower, & a large mirrored walk-in closer. Half shutters add to the charm of the room.
